In every draft, NFL teams and fans generally have a good idea about the top prospects in the draft. However, what makes some GMs great is finding that sleeper who could produce well in the NFL.
Throughout the NFL’s history, there have been exceptional quarterbacks in every stage of the draft. The most recent would be Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who went in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Of course, who could forget Tom Brady? The infamous sixth round pick out of Michigan became the face of the New England Patriots.
With that being said, who are three sleepers at the quarterback position in the 2018 NFL Draft?
Kyle Lauletta, Richmond
Lauletta first came onto the scene at the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl, where he had an impressive showing. The quarterback out of Richmond has shown NFL scouts that he can make big plays and can be a field general. His small school pedigree makes him hard to assess, but he did play well against decent competition.
Projected Round: 3rd round
Projected Team: New England Patriots
I could see Lauletta learning from the GOAT himself and eventually taking over the Patriots throne once Brady retires.
Kurt Benkert, Virginia
On tape, Benkert looks to be a solid quarterback. Many NFL teams like his smart decision making, which makes him an easy draft selection. However, Benkert lacks the “wow” factor. He was inconsistent at times at Virginia and is limited in his physical abilities. However, I still believe teams will like his football IQ and take a chance on him in the middle rounds of the draft.
Projected Round: 3rd Round
Projected Team: Cincinnati Bengals
I think Benkert could go to the Bengals and compete for the starting job with Andy Dalton eventually. With AJ McCarron out of Cincy, Benkert immediately becomes the second string QB. Look out for a mid-season switch at quarterback for the Bengals.
Tanner Lee, Nebraska
Tanner Lee was a difficult evaluation. I saw great talent in him, but when under pressure, his entire football IQ went out the window. I like him because when he has decent protection, he plays like a starting NFL quarterback. If he has adequate protection, I truly believe Lee could be a solid draft pick in the latter stages of the draft.
Projected Round: 6th round
Projected Team: Dallas Cowboys
Jerry Jones may be a bit of a nut, but he knows quarterbacks. If Lee can improve in his ability to play under pressure, he could have a Nick Foles-like situation if Prescott is injured or benched.
