New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will miss the entire 2017 season after suffering an ACL tear in preseason action against the Detroit Lions. According to Albert Breer of MMQB.com, Edelman suffered a complete tear in his right knee.
This injury is a blow to the Patriots, as Edelman surpassed 1,100 receiving yards last year and was a consistent weapon for the team’s offense. However, it may not be a big blow.
Despite winning Super Bowl 51, the Pats were very aggressive this offseason. They made a number of moves the average Super Bowl winner would not even consider. The most notable move the team made was trading for former Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Like Edelman, Cooks surpassed 1,100 receiving yards last year. Unlike Edelman, Cooks is a top 15 receiver in the league.
Brandin Cooks will more than soften the blow Julian Edelman’s injury has on the team. With his fantastic ability to take the top off the defense, above-average route running, and solid intangibles, Cooks and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be a dangerous pairing in 2017. Throw in ascending receivers Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell, as well as a healthy Rob Gronkowski, it’s more likely than not the Pats offense will IMPROVE in 2017, even with the Edelman injury.
Still, Edelman’s injury hurts the team, especially from a morale standpoint. It’s okay, though. Their morales will likely improve in February yet again.
